I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is I’ll Say Yes from 2001.
This week I’m on holiday. I won’t be near my computer, so I’m writing a batch of posts immediately before my holiday and scheduling them. One of this week’s prompts is about making a promise to yourself. My answer to that was my promise to perserve in my faith. You don’t need to be perfect to be a Christian. It’s all about a willingness to commit yourself and engage with God. I never heard this hymn before, but maybe I should have made this one the theme of that post. The lyrics are very simple, but I find it really touching.
When I hear this hymn, I think of this statement by Jesus:
John 6:28-29
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
And do we say “Yes” to this?
This doesn’t mean that we just believe. God also wants us to grow in our love for Him and for others. But truly believing is the starting point, and God Himself enables us to persevere, though the New Testament also calls on us to be active in persevering. But ultimately, all the credit and glory goes to God. No-one will ever be able to boast about getting to heaven by their own devices.
