Back around 1982, here in Ireland, I came up to Limerick from Cork on a little evangelism team. Cork is in the far South of Ireland. We went along to an open-air preaching meeting that some Limerick churches were holding. I was handing out Christian literature. I remember meeting an angry older Roman Catholic man who threatened to hit me and told me to “get back up North”. With my Cork accent, I don’t know why he assumed that I was from Northern Ireland 😀. But back then, and maybe still, it had more evangelical Christians than we had in the South. I found it quite funny, but a little scary too.
Nowadays, both Roman Catholics and evangelicals are opposed by the far left, so if someone is going to be nasty to you, its more likely to be a far left person than a conservative Roman Catholic. But in the early decades of the 20th Century, there was sometimes a lot of animosity between religious groups who sought to do evangelism.
