I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the old hymns.
Today’s song is All the Way my Saviour Leads Me from 1875
1. All the way my Savior leads me.
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt his tender mercy,
Who thru' life has been my Guide?
Heav'nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus fashions all things well.
2. All the way my Savior leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread;
Gives me grace for ev’ry trial,
Feeds me with the living Bread.
Tho' my weary steps may falter,
And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see.
3. All the way my Savior leads me;
Oh, the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, cloth'd immortal,
Wings its flight to realms of day
This my song thru' endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way.
This is one of those hymns that aren’t directly address to God. It feels like a hymn that you sing to yourself, but when you contemplate the love of Jesus for you, it inevitably leads to worship. It carries more weight having been written by Fanny Crosby, who was blind from an early age. It was one of over 8,000 hymns that she wrote. She is said to have composed the hymn after a moment of answered prayer, describing it as “a hymn of gratitude for the Lord’s leading.”
Here are some other versions of the hymn:
