Hymns: You Are My All in All

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.

Today’s song is You Are My All in All from the 1991.

You Are My All in All
Lyrics

This is another one that I only discovered about 10 years ago, but it’s over 30 years old. It has an interesting background. The writer, Dennis Jernigan did not sit down to write a hit song. He wrote it during a deeply personal, low period of spiritual and emotional exhaustion. He began playing the piano and simply speaking out his dependency on God, which organically formed the lyrics.

And the song has had a huge impact, though we never sang it in my circles. But it’s nice that what someone does over 30 years ago off in Oklahoma can affect us today in our daily lives. In New Testament times, you’d need to be in a meeting to bless one another. But now we can bless people all over the world and down through time, particularly through hymn writing. And even if we don’t write hymns, if we are enthusiastic about Christian resources available through the web, we encourage their use to bless people through Christian fellowship and mutual encouragement.

Here are some other versions of today’s song:
