I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy ๐. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is Every Promise from 2005.
I’m totally enjoying discovering all these 21st century songs. This one is over 20 years old. I’ve nearly always been a bit behind the times. Back in the 1970s, I was mainly into 60s music – until punk came along ๐. I like secular music, but it’s always a joy to find hymns and worship songs that work well lyrically and musically. This one is all about God’s word – based on the following verses:
Matthew 4:4
4 Jesus answered, โIt is written: โMan shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
When Jesus was tempted by Satan, who also tempted Adam and Eve, He responded by quoting God’s word. Those who dismiss or downgrade the Old Testament should remind themselves that Jesus regularly endorsed it. And now we have the New Testament too. Jesus gave the apostles the task of producing that for us. And like the Old Testament, you can see the human element to it – but we can also think of it all as coming from the mouth of God.
2 Corinthians 1:20
20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are โYesโ in Christ. And so through him the โAmenโ is spoken by us to the glory of God.
I think of all the debates about fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. But the really true believers mainly focus on the coming of Jesus Himself. Just thinking about Him causes us to say “Yes” and “Amen”. We can debate the details, but all our joy is based on the fact that Jesus came and died for us and will come again to raise the living and the dead.
Here are some other versions of today’s song:
