What do you think is the future of AI?

I remember attending a university lecture back in 2000 where an AI expert from the UK mentioned that in the long term, AI will replace humanity. And he thought that as AI develops and begins to develop conciousness, some will want to end it and some won’t. So, it might lead to a huge world war. Interestingly, he said that he was fine with AI replacing humanity. He wasn’t in any way religious. But he was happy for the universe to keep evolving. And our time will soon be up. But at question time, some were skeptical about the notion of AI developing conciousness. But, if I were an atheist, and I believed that conciousness was something that simply developed by evolution without any role for God, why would I think that conciousness would not develop in some other way?

But maybe AI will just remain a useful tool. I’m quite amazed at how IT in general has developed in my lifetime, particularly the web. I first used a computer back around 1984 at college to do a maths problem. I saw little point to computers apart from games 😀. But so much has changed since then. And I first heard of smart phones around 2007. When I was young, I thought of nothing but flying cars or going to the moon for a holiday when I thought about the future. Things are getting better – but might get scary. Who knows?

Here are three songs about robots that I remember from my youth – from 1978 – but I added a fourth about God Himself – I’m pleased that He’s the one who has ultimate control – and He loves us:
