I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is Lifesong from 2005.
It seems to think of our whole life as a song of worship to God. It’s good not to confine worship to hymns on Sunday. The more time that we can spend thinking about God and expressing love to God, the better.
I think of the following verses:
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
I remember being mad about rock music when I was 18. Because so much of it seemed to glorify sin rather than God, I wondered if I should stop listening to it. I did to some degree, but like Opera, you can enjoy music without taking much notice of the lyrics. I didn’t have any trouble getting to like hymns, but I could never get into Christian rock music back then. It sounded silly. But it has improved. But maybe great artists and songs are quite rare nowadays in both secular music and Christian music. But I am enjoying getting to know the modern Christian artists. Nearly everything I love comes from the 20th century, so I struggle to like things musically 😀. But I certainly love any lyrics that point me to God. And maybe I’ll eventually grow to like the music too.
Here are some other versions of the song:
