I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the old hymns.
Today’s song is Now I Belong to Jesus from 1938.
Jesus my Lord will love me forever
From Him no pow’r of evil can sever
He gave His life to ransom my soul
Now I belong to Him
Chorus
Now I belong to Jesus
Jesus belongs to me
Not for the years of time alone
But for eternity
Once I was lost in sin’s degradation
Jesus came down to bring me salvation
Lifted me up from sorrow and shame
Now I belong to Him
Joy floods my soul for Jesus has saved me
Freed me from sin that long had enslaved me
His precious blood He gave to redeem
Now I belong to Him
I do remember singing this one, but not very much. Perhaps it was generally sung by soloists. I love the reminder of the permanence of our relationship with Christ. This reminds me of the following verses that Jesus spoke to those who opposed Him:
John 10:25-30
25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[c]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.
Here are some other versions of today’s hymn:
