I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.
Today’s song is We Fall Down from 1997.
This one was inspired by the heavenly worship that features in Revelation 4. People often debate on how to interpret the Book of Revealtion. Some take it more literally than others. But I generally focus on the general message of worship and victory. I try not to get bogged down in the debates – or let them distract me from the overall message. And many hymns have been inspired by the Book of Revelation, both old and new.
This hymn is quite simple lyrically – focusing of the holiness of God. I think of the Old Testament and a passage in Isaiah – where Isaiah had a vision somewhat similar to what we see in the Book of Revelation:
Isaiah 6:1-3
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Heaven would probably be impossible to describe accurately – but in such visions, perhaps it’s translated into the language of human fantasy – something that we can visualize. But again, the purpose is to point us towards God in heaven and allow Him to inspire our lives here on earth.
