Hymns: Hold On to Me

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.

Today’s song is Hold On to Me from 2021.

Last month I remember holding my newly born first grandchild. It was a very precious moment. I hug people from time to time, but there’s nothing sweeter than holding a new born baby – something referred to in the hymn, Because He Lives – on of my favourites from my earlier years.

So, in the case of this song – I’m the baby 😀 – and God is holding me.

John 1:12-13

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Of course, my grandchild is much more interested in his mother (my daughter) than in me. His whole world revolves around her. And I want my whole world to revolve around God. I don’t cry like a baby, but I want to cry out to God and acknowledge my relationship with Him and my thanks and sense of dependence on Him everyday.

Here is one of my favourite verses from the gospels:

Mark 9:34
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

I love the lyrics of this hymn. They’re so honest. We don’t always feel superspiritual. What God desires is that we reach out to Him and have that sense of dependence and willingness to learn and grow. I see that too in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. Those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
