I enjoyed the story of the Elephant Man. I don’t see myself as particularly compassionate, but sometimes an unusual wave of compassion hits me. And I was inspired by the character that Anthony Hopkins played – a doctor who attempted to make life easier for the man who had an exteme disability.
The movie was set in Victorian London. I became quite facinated by the locations in which it was filmed. I remember visiting Liverpool Street station, the area around Southwark Cathedral and the London hospital in the Whitechapel road back in 1982. A nurse there pointed out the room in which he lived.
