Hymns: God of Wonders

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy πŸ˜€. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.

Today’s song is God of Wonders from 2000.

God of Wonders
Lyrics

This one is new to me, even though it’s 26 years old. It emphasizes God’s holiness and the fact that God is beyond our galaxy. What’s meant by that? I just think of the fact that the whole universe was created by God. He is present everywhere, yet above and beyond space and time. I find science fascinating. And so many new discoveries have been made in my lifetime – not by me though πŸ˜€. But God is far greater than all that. It feels very natural to worship Him.

You always get folks who shift the focus to atheistic science and see religion as mythological. Much of it is based on old myths, traditions and speculation, but the universe came from somewhere and shows evidence of a great mind behind it. And if the human mind is one of the most fascinating things about the universe, why shouldn’t we think that what we see in the mind, or something much greater, doesn’t exist anywhere else – even outside the universe. And people have always had an instinctive awareness of God. Back in the 1960s, a famous Time Magazine had a cover asked if God was Dead – but faith in God is very much alive. It takes different shapes in different places and times. Another Time Magazine cover from 1971 was titled “The Jesus Revolution” – which was about a new movement amoung young people, and we have had various new movements since.

It’s a joy for me to see new generations praising God. Here are some other versions of today’s hymn.
