Hymns: Come Let Us Join Our Cheerful Songs

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the old hymns.

Today’s song is Come Let Us Join Our Cheerful Songs from 1707.

Come Let Us Join Our Cheerful Songs
Lyrics
1 Come, let us join our cheerful songs
with angels round the throne;
ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
but all their joys are one.

2 'Worthy the Lamb that died,' they cry,
'to be exalted thus';
'Worthy the Lamb,' our lips reply,
'for he was slain for us.'

3 Jesus is worthy to receive
honour and power divine;
and blessings, more than we can give,
be, Lord, for ever thine.
4 Let all that dwell above the sky,
and air, and earth, and seas,
conspire to lift thy glories high,
and speak thine endless praise.

5 The whole creation joins in one
to bless the sacred name
of him that sits upon the throne,
and to adore the Lamb.

I don’t hear this one much nowadays, but back in the 1980s and 1990s, we’d often open our church services with it. It’s a little reminder that we’re not alone in worshipping God. It’s not only other believers around the world, but it’s angels in heaven, celebrating together.

At a secular level, I think of the joy and celebration when Ireland qualified for the 1990 World Cup. We didn’t win, but it was a very memorable summer. And it wasn’t just the team of players that created the joy. It was Irish people all over the country and world celebrating together. I’d like to see people rejoicing in Jesus in such a public way, but that might only happen when Jesus returns. Yet, spiritually, millions do worship together. We just need to remind ourselves that it’s happening.

I don’t know how popular the hymn is nowadays, but I can think of every hymn as joining our cheerful songs with angels ’round the throne. Here are some other instances of today’s hymn:
