I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy π. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is More Like Jesus from 2019.
Many of the newer hymns aren’t familiar to me, but we do sing this one at the church that I currently attend. A few years ago, I had to decide which evangelical church to attend in my city. Part of me wanted to find one that resembled churches as they were 40 or 50 years ago π. But I remember attending some newer trendy churches back then and being impressed when older people fellowshipped with us rather than steering clear of us. So, now that I’m old, I’m happy to be among 21st century churches, despite the fact that I love all the old stuff too. But I’ve always liked contemporary secular music, so why distance myself from contemporary Christian music?. I see nothing in the New Testament that suggests that we should stay 50 or 500 years behind in our church music styles. The great thing about YouTube is that I can find hymns from all eras. But I am keen to get to know contemporary Christian music – as well as all the older hymns.
This is a deeply devotional song. For years, I was quite prejudiced about newer worship music, thinking that it was all superficial and weak doctrinally. But when I look at the lyrics, I’m always impressed. And it’s great to be surrounded by so many young people singing it. Nowadays, you get people from all over the world in Irish churches. And it’s a real joy to find hymn videos from all over the world too. I suspect that a time might come when most worship music will originate in Asia, Africa, and South America. But currently the pattern follows that of secular music. Most current worship music comes from the US and Australia. Perhaps I should dig around and see if I can find songs from every country – that would be a nice project – even if they’re in different languages.
Here are some other versions of today’s hymn:
