Hymns: You Rescued Me

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.

Today’s song is You Rescued Me from 1994.

You Rescued Me

I classify songs of the late 20th century as “in-between” hymns. It feels modern, but 1994 is a long way back now. I was only 32 back then. I’d like to be rescued from 2026 and put back to 1994. But then, I’d have to go through all my trials again. Maybe I’d do it if everything could be perfect – or maybe I’ll just wait for heaven for that 😀.

I discovered this one around 2017. I love it, though I can never remember singing or hearing it in church. I like where it says “You loved me before I knew you”. Much of the Bible focuses on us choosing to follow Christ, but it also tells us about God loving us before we knew Him and choosing us. All sorts of philosophical arguments arise, but it’s always a great joy and comfort to know that my salvation depends on God rather than me, though I am active in believing.

Ephesians 2:4-5
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—

Romans 5:8
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

And it was always in God’s plan that Jesus would come and redeem us:

1 Peter 1:18-20
18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

The language of the Book of Revelation is highly symbolic, but it’s still clear that God planned the rescue of many even before the creation of the world:

Revelation 12:8
All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

Anyway, I spent much time debating theology throughout my life, but in these latter days, I like to focus on devotion, and this song helps me to do just that.

I don’t see many versions of the song on YouTube, but I do see some other songs with the same title:
