Head to Killarney

Daily writing prompt
Which is the best thing to do in your city?

I’m not sure that I understand the question. Being an evangelical Christian, I could say preach the gospel. But maybe the question relates to tourism and what to do if you find yourself stuck in Limerick for a few days. I’m from Cork, and though I’ve lived in Limerick for most of my life now, I’m not terribly loyal to it. We do have a few tourist attractions, such as Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the Hunt Museum and King Johns Castle. But I always recommend that people take a day trip out of the city. And of these, perhaps Killarney is the best. This photo features “Ladies View” Killarney. I remember visiting there as a child back in 1971, which was my first time in Killarney.

But I’ll list some other spots in Limerick and the surrounding counties:

Nearby

  • Bunratty Castle and Folk Village, which is in County Clare but just about 20 minutes drive from Limerick City
  • Adare – a nice village with various historic sites, such as monasteries and castles
  • Foynes, which is a pleasant town on the Shannon estuary. It has a Flying Boat Museum. I don’t mean a boat museum that flies πŸ˜€. It’s about aircraft that initially landed in the water nearby before Shannon Airport was built.
  • Shannon, which has an airport and a little aircraft museum
  • Killaloe – a pleasant lakeside town in Country Clare, but close to Limerick
  • Lough Gur – an ancient site near a lake
  • Curragh Chase forest park

Further

I’d head to Kerry, Clare, or Cork, especially Kerry

  • Killarney
  • Ring of Kerry
  • Dingle Penninsula
  • Doolin, County Clare, from which you can take a trip to the Aran Islands
  • Ailwee Cave, Country Clare, a pleasant place, even apart from the cave. We don’t always enter the cave. If you ever watched the Father Ted comedy show, you might remember the episode when they entered that cave and got trapped πŸ˜€.
  • Any seaside town along the Clare coast
  • Cork city and county. I particularly like Glengarrif and Gougane Barra. I grew up in Cork, so maybe it doesn’t feel exotic to me, but many of my foreign friends love the place.

So, I always close with a few songs or hymns. The Keith & Kristyn Getty one features the Antrim coast, which is quite a long trip from Limerick.
