I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.
Today’s song is O Give Thanks to the Lord from 1980.
I am determined to promote every song that’s been a blessing to me throughout my life. I can’t find many performances of this one on YouTube, but I don’t want it to be forgotten. It’s a quick and simple song. Many older Christians used to criticize modern choruses when I was younger because they weren’t particularly rich theologically. But not everyone cared. And many of these modern songs were based on Scriptural passages. This one draws heavily from Psalm 118:
Psalm 118:29
“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His mercy endures forever.”
I often remember people emphasizing the world “dance” in today’s hymn. This was quite common in charismatic fellowships back in the early 1980s. I don’t remember doing much dancing myself, but there is a basis for it in Scripture:
Psalm 149:3
Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp.
Many Scriptural verses speak of giving thanks to God, and many hymns and modern songs are about giving thanks. I generally like to find various performances of my daily hymn. It’s a little challenging today because there are few instances of this hymn, but many instances of similarly titled hymns. So, being a lazy person 😊, I’m just gonna add some hymns that speak of giving thanks. I should try to learn some new hymns rather than dwell on those that meant to much to me in the past. So, here goes:
