I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.
Today’s song is You Are the Mighty King from 1982.
I discovered this one in 2017, when I looked in the Mission Praise hymn book and tried to find all the songs on Spotify. It was great fun, and it introduced me to a lot of wonderful songs. Before that, I sometimes dismissed modern songs because I associated them with what I regarded as the silly or sinister side of evangelicalism. But I don’t do that any more. I just focus on the songs. And it’s silly or sinister to be judgemental, though it’s fine to weigh things up and decide what church or movement you want to align to.
I see few instances of the song on YouTube, but in my view, it’s worth knowing. I sometimes wonder what other great secular and spiritual songs are out there but are still unknown to me.
This hymn touches on an Old Testament prophecy about Jesus – who was then the coming Messiah. This verse is often used at Christmas:
Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Here are a few versions of today’s song that I managed to find:
