Pressing On

Do you set personal goals for yourself?

I like the idea, and I sometimes do, but I should do it more. And when I set them, I don’t always meet them –  but maybe I don’t always need to stick to them rigidly. But I think that it’s a good practice to set goals, especially for physical, mental, and spiritual health.

For spiritual health, I sometimes think in terms of the following verses:

Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Some think that the death of Jesus merely opened the way for us to work our way to heaven. Others (like me) think that He has done it all. But even so, if God promised that I’d win a race in the Olympics, I’d still want to practice and run it well. It’s not that I fear that God wouldn’t fulfil His promise. It’s that I’d enjoy it all anyway. And when we come to Christ, we don’t live perfect lives, but our goal is to love Him, love others, and do our very best to meet that goal. It makes no sense to repent and believe in Christ to “tick the box”, and then to ignore Him for the rest of our lives. I don’t imagine very many do that, but some fear that it happens and therefore stress the need to make Jesus Lord of your life as well as Saviour. It raised all sorts of debates. But hopefully most agree, that we should all aim to live godly lives but give all the credit for our salvation to God.
