We got into the habit of waiting at 6 AM when the kids were young. I’d like to break that habit and wake later, but I’ve never been able to do so.
Coffee looms large first thing in the morning. I didn’t always have morning coffee. Until I was 20, I only knew about instant coffee – and it was something you’d drink later in the day. I discovered filter coffee when we sold it in our Christian coffee bar in Covent Garden back in 1983

And I wasn’t really won over to it until I met my future wife in 1985. I’d find it hard to part with coffee. After a while, I have green tea and toast and go for a 30 minute walk, while listening to a mix of songs from my chosen year. Today’s chosen year is 1965. I start my chosen year routine with 1994, half-way through my life. Then, every day, I alternate between going forward a year, and back a year. So, yesterday was 2024. Each day, I’ll listen to songs from the year, look back at memories, and I often pray for people that I remember from each year. I’ve always enjoyed living the the past – for at least part of each day π.
When I finish my morning walk, I have porridge and an apple, and I write my answers to the daily prompt, and I write about my daily hymn. I don’t write much about the hymns, but I just enjoy reflecting on hymns and finding youTube versions of them to post. What happens after that? It varies. When I was working, I’d work. Now that I’m retired, I have more freedom. But I still sometimes like to study material related to my working life. And playing or listening to music is part of my daily routine as is shopping and listening to or reading Christian material. And I might do some tidying or other mudane tasks too π.
So, I’ll end with a couple of coffee songs and morning hymns:
