Hymns: The Steadfast Love of the Lord

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy πŸ˜€. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.

Today’s song is The Steadfast Love of the Lord from the 1974.

The Steadfast Love of the Lord
Lyrics

I think that I do remember singing this one back in the 1980s. It wasn’t one of the more popular ones, but it was among the new choruses that we’d sing back then. I perfectly remember the lyrics to the whole song – aren’t I amazing πŸ˜€? But it’s a short song – so maybe I’m not as amazing as I thought I was 😒. But maybe we should have more short songs that are easy to remember – especially when their almost solely based on Bible verses.

Interestingly, it’s based on a verse from Lamentations. I rarely hear that Old Testament book even mentioned. It just goes to show that you can find encouragement throughout the who Bible, though certain books are richer than others in thatr respect. I remember getting a little Gideon New Testament in school, but it also included the Psalms – and Old Testament book – maybe because it was seen as one of most widely read Old Testament books. And many hymns are based on that. But I like references to the more obscure books too.

Lamentations 3:22–23:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

When I read this verse, it urges me to trust in God. I can think of plenty of things that I’m thankful for, but also lots of seemingly, unanswered prayer. But it isn’t really unanswered. God listens and responds by giving me what’s best for me. And what’s best might be to leave me facing whatever problem I want to be rid of. But I trust that He knows what He is doing. So, sometimes, I can delight in His love, and other times I might wish that He’d do everything my way – but His way is best.
