I dislike conspiracy theories, but maybe someday such a theory might turn out to be true. But I tend to associate them with hateful people or silly people. Maybe a believable one would be that William Shakespeare was a front man and that the plays were written by Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere, or Christopher Marlowe. I don’t believe it, but it’s more believable than most that I hear about.
What about belief in a flat earth? – and the notion that the scientific outlook is a conspiracy theory? Well, when I first heard that we were living on a giant ball that spins at hundreds of miles per hour, it seemed quite bizarre. I was only a young child. Of course, I knew nothing about conpiracy theories back then. So, I just trusted the scientists.
As an evangelical Christian, I’ve often read books on creationism and intelligent design. Some believe that the secular scientific communty try to surpress scientists who argue for these. But I’m keen to listen to both sides. And I do believe the Bible’s account. I have heard many attempts to reconcile both views, but none seem very convincing. I am willing to accept that Genesis gives us a simple model – the way a simple diagram of an atom consiting of a proton, neutron, and electron might be considered useful, but doesn’t portray the complexity of the sub-atomic world.
Even within science, there are puzzles, such as experiments that show light as a wave and other experiements that show it as a particle. It’s hard to see how both can be true, but most believe that we’ll find the answer some day. And though I’m more interested in the Bible than secular theories of the history of the earth, I don’t think that we should surpress attempts to learn about the history of the earth for fear of it contradicting the Bible You can still take a literal view of Genesis and view evolution etc .as something that might have elements of truth. And you can take a “wait and see” policy about what the whole truth is. What I wouldn’t want to do is to treat the Bible as just being the work of humans. I believe it to be God’s word, written through humans.
I don’t want to be a silly fundamentalist, but neither do I want to be a silly liberal. So I’ll stick with being my silly self 😄.
