Hymns: Fierce

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.

Today’s song is Fierce from 2016.

Fierce
Lyrics

Fierce is a peculiar title for a hymn 😀. When I think of the word, I think of wild, aggressive, or violent animals. Yet, like most words, it has a range of meanings. We often use it as a synonym for intensity. For example, someone might say, “It’s fierce hot today.”

And in this hymn, God’s love is compared to a tidal wave or a hurricane. It’s so easy to fall into taking a deistic view of God. We might see God as someone who created the universe, but takes little interest in us. If I were God, how could I have any kind of relationship with billions of people who are so far beneath me. But God is different. God can relate to you as if no-one else existed.

I once heard someone say that if you were the only person in the world who ever sinned, and you only committed one sin, Jesus would still come and die for you to save you. There would be no other means of salvation. And He would be pleased to do so:

And when we pray, we might doubt that God hears us. Surely he’s busy with other things? No – He can and He does. And this song reminds me of God’s great love for me and how He is paying attention to me 24/7.

Luke 12:6-7
. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

1 John 4:10
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
