I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.
Today’s song is Beauty for Brokeness from the 1993.
The hymn was specifically commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of Tearfund, a prominent Christian relief and development charity passionate about ending global poverty. It sounds quite traditional for a 1990s hymn. I’d like to see more modern hymns written in this style. Graham Kendrick was probably the most well known living hymnwriter in my lifetime. I don’t see many performances of most of his songs on YouTube, but I have managed to find plenty of performances of this one. It was by no means the most popular of his songs in my circles, but maybe it’ll be the most remembered. Every decade brings numerous popular songs, but few become long-term classics. This is so in secular and spiritual music.
