I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy π. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is Hymns: Awake My Soul from 2019.
Here’s an older hymn that calls on the soul to wake. And several other hymns and choruses include the “awake” theme. And historically, two major revivals in the United States were known as “The Great Awakening”. And it all begins with God’s work in our souls, but we’re also called to be active in waking out of our spiritual slumber.
The term “Awake” or “wake” occurs in hymns and in secular songs. Here are some examples:
Hymns
- Awake, My Soul, and with the Sun
- Christians, Awake, Salute the Happy Morn
- Awake! Awake! The Master is Calling Us
- Awake, Awake to Love and Work
- Awake, Glad Soul! Awake! Awake!
- Awake My Soul” (Hillsong Worship, 2019)
- “Awake My Soul” (Chris Tomlin ft. Lecrae, 2013)
- “Wake“ (Hillsong Young & Free, 2013)
- “Awake“ (Journey Worship, 2023)
- “Awake, Awake, O Zion” (Matthew Reed)
Secular Songs
- “Wake Me Up” β Avicii (2013)
- “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” – Wham (1984)
- “Wake Up” β Hilary Duff (2005)
- “Wake Me Up When September Ends” β Green Day (2005)
- “Wake Up” β Arcade Fire (2005)
- “Wake Up” β Rage Against the Machine (1992)
- “Wake Up Boo!” β The Boo Radleys (1995)
- “Wake Up Little Susie” β The Everly Brothers (1957)
- “Wake Up Everybody” β Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes (1975):
- “Wake Up Alone” β Amy Winehouse (2006)
I’m not familiar with all the songs on these lists, but here are two that I particularly like; one hymn and one secular song:
There’s actually a newer song name “Awake O Zion” too, but I’m quite nostalgic about the older one. I was only 20 back in 1982. And I was only 13 when Wake Up Everybody was released π. How time flies!
So let’s leap forward to 2019 and listen to some other versions of today’s song. It’s a lovely notion – waking up to worship the Saviour.
