I did learn Irish and French in school, but I was never fluent. So, I just speak English, and I’m happy with that. Some ultra-nationalists in Ireland tended to want everyone to speak Irish and distance themselves from English-speaking cultures. I never embraced that outlook. I do like being Irish, and I like some aspects of Irish culture, but most music, movies, and sport that I was into growing up was English and American. And my parents and grandparents were similar, as were most of my friends.

I would like to be fluent in Irish, but I never managed to become fluent. I was once on Cape Clear Island for three weeks, where the goal was to speak nothing but Irish during all social interactions. It was part of my teacher training course. But no-one bothered to speak Irish apart from in the classroom πŸ˜€.

Perhaps it might be easier nowadays with the web, AI etc. Maybe you could create virtual friends that speak nothing but Irish.

Anyway, maybe the closest that I came to liking Irish traditional music was Horslips. Here are a few examples of their songs:

And here are a couple of hymns in Irish.
