Hymns: We Declare Your Majesty

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.

Today’s song is We Declare Your Majesty from 1995.

We Declare Your Majesty
Lyrics

This is one that I discovered back in 2017 when I decided to explore older modern hymn that I had ignored through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. I really like this one, and I’m sorry that I never had the opportunity to sing it in church. I sometimes think that it would be nice to have a weekly church meeting where we sing all these 1990s hymns together. But at least I can find them on YouTube, though I don’t see many performances of this particular one. It’s mainly lyric videos.

So what does “We Declare Your Majesty” mean? Well isn’t God the King of Kings and Lord of Lords anyway? But it’s a matter of acknowledging it in our own hearts and minds that He is King. Several hymns touch on that. Here are some examples:

So is today’s hymn specifically about Jesus or is it about God in general terms? I see nothing specifically about Jesus in it, though it does speak of His name being exalted, something we associate with the resurrection an ascension of Jesus. The term majesty and terms such as King of Kings and Lord of Lords are used both of the Father and Jesus. Here are some verses that use the term majesty:

2 Peter 1:16
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Jude 1:25
25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Hebrews 1:3
3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
