My title is a Cork slang expression that we used to say to express our anxiety when something scared us. I haven’t heard it for years.π
I’ve never had to stay in hospital overnight, so I feel quite grateful about that. But I’m always a bit anxious about seeing doctors and dentists. I don’t even enjoy getting haircuts π.

Yet, I do cope, and I generally feel quite exhilarated when the appointment is over and done with. Doctors might not always be in a position to immediately solve a problem, but the very fact that I’ve placed it in their hands brings me some element of peace.
I post a daily hymn on WordPress.com, and yesterday’s was “Father I place into your hands the things I cannot do.” And that’s a comfort to me – to bring it before God.
This week I have a doctor and dentist appointment. During the dental teeth cleaning, I often feel that I’m about to be hit by intense pain or something. But I just try to stay calm and for some strange reason, I think that I’m about to go to heaven That’ll happen someday, but I don’t know why I always get that feeling when I’m at the dentist. Maybe God feels more present when you undergo trials.
What else makes me nervous? I’m retired now, so most of these things apply to my past life.
- Being near a girl that I had a teenaged crush on – exhilarating and terrifying at the same time
- Job interviews
- Exams, especially the driving test
- Public performances, from singing and ventriloquism to sermons
- Being summoned for jury duty, though I didn’t end up doing it on the two occasions when I was called
- Driving in particular circumstances – I don’t drive as much nowadays, but if the car starts beeping and gives me a false alarm that the steering might lock or something like that, I get the jitters.
- NCT Test for the car, which is required every couple of years in Ireland. Thankfully, it generally passes, but I’m always a bit nervous about it.
- Coming back to work after holidays, wondering what horrors lie in store for me
I’m sure that other things make me nervous, but I like to write “off the top of my head” for the daily prompt. My answers are generally a little silly, but they get more likes than the serious stuff on my site. I’m always hoping that people will stumble across the more serious stuff. π
Anyway, here are a couple of hymns that can calm my nerves at times:
