Day Trip to Cambridge

Daily writing prompt
Describe your most ideal day from beginning to end.

On my trips to the UK, as an individual and with the family, I used to always love the London to Cambridge trip. I remember staying in a Youth Hostel near King’s Cross station. We’d wake, pop down to Pret a Manger for coffee and a danish pastry, and then plan out the day.

If I got my way, we’d walk across the road to Kings Cross station and hop on the train the Cambridge.

The city itself is beautiful. I have many magical memories of various visits. I first went there in July 1983. Then, we’d walk along the riverside and head for Grantchester. I never boarded a punt, but I do enjoy watching them.

Then I’d like to take the short train trip to Ely and visit the cathedral.

And next, perhaps go back to London via the Liverpool Street West Anglia route and spend time in the West End and along the river. I have happy memories of many day trips out of London, but I have a special love for Cambridge. Perhaps, Pink Floyd have something to do with it. I was big into their music in my teens.

In July 1983, I wanted to find Grantchester Meadows, a title of one of their early songs, and somewhere that they spent their time in their early years. It’s actually a little road where one of them lived, but it’s close to a delightful riverside walk to the little village of Grantchester. It has a church associated with a Rupert Brook poem (The Old Vicarage):

Stands the Church clock at ten to three ?
And is there honey still for tea ?

I like to include a couple of hymns in my posts – so let’s choose King’s College Cambridge and Ely cathedral:

Why didn’t a choose a day in Ireland? Well, I could have chosen Killarney and various other delightful locations. But I don’t often get to the UK these days, so it feels a bit more precious to me. πŸ˜€. And it’s reasonably close to home.

  1. The beauty of Cambridge University is a heritage site in itself. I will definitely visit it whenever I come to London.
