I answered a question similar to this a few weeks ago in my Hard Habit to Break post. I described a few habits there. Perhaps I should just pick one. The question asks about joy. The word has a variety of meanings. At the deepest level, communing with God brings me joy. I like to see people mentioning their spiritual life in blogs, but if it’s just about that, you don’t really feel that you’re getting to know an individual. So, I’ll describe a habit that isn’t directly related to spiritual things.
And that’s probably having my first cup of coffee when I wake in the morning. I didn’t always do that, but it’s nice to have something very simple to look forward to, instead of worrying about what the day might bring as I open my eyes 😀. When I was a child, we never knew about real coffee. We just had the instant stuff, and I never really drank tea or coffee much.
Then, we had a coffee bar in Covent Garden Christian Centre when I worked for a year in London City Mission, and we had a filter coffee machine.

I couldn’t understand why we didn’t just use instant coffee. The whole process seemed very complicated. Then, after a few years, I met my girlfriend (now wife), and she introduced me to real coffee; Bewley’s coffee. After that, I never really went back to the instant coffee. I do generally have instant decaffenated coffee late at night, but I don’t enjoy it like the morning coffee 😀.
I like to end with something spiritual, but there’s nothing about coffee in the Bible 😀. The closest thing is wine:
Psalm 104:14-15
He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:
15 wine that gladdens human hearts,
oil to make their faces shine,
and bread that sustains their hearts.
So, like all food and drink, we can see coffee as a gift from God. All the legitimate things that bring us joy are gifts from God.
When Paul was speaking in Lystra, people thought that Paul himself was a god. He quickly pointed them to the true God, and though they had yet to know God, he reminded them that God was already bringing them joy:
Acts 14:16-17
16 In the past, he let all nations go their own way. 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”
I always like to end with a few songs. This is the best that I can do today with respect to coffee😀:
I am familiar with a few modern songs about coffee, which are good as songs, but feature sad people drawing comfort from coffee:
Well, perhaps such things can comfort us, but it’s better to dig deeper and find lasting joy. This is even more true of wine:
Eph 5:17-19
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,
Here are some hymns about joy:
