Sweeter Than Honey

Daily writing prompt
What’s your go-to comfort food?

I don’t think comfort food is a big thing for me, but a few things come to mind:

  • Coffee and bun
  • Cornetto ice cream
  • Fruit and nut chocolate
  • Pizza
  • Danish pastry

If I’m under stress, I think that I just like to relax or play music.

I always like to spend a little time being silly and then being serious in my blog. I generally try to be silly first 😀. That way people might say: “Ah I thought that he was really silly, but he’s actually quite serious.” instead of saying: “Ah I thought that he was really serious, but he’s actually quite silly.”

So, here I begin with music and then speak about the Bible. But if you think the Bible is silly, you’ll probably still think I’m silly. Or if you’re really serious about the Bible, you might think I’m really silly for being silly instead of being serious throughout the post. Anyway, it’s silly of me to talk like that. Let’s get to the point 😀:

Here are ten songs that I’m familiar with that touch on sweet things:

  • “Sweet Like Chocolate” – Shanks & Bigfoot
  • “I Want Candy” – Bow Wow Wow
  • “Candy” – Ash
  • “Candy Girl” – New Edition
  • “Honey” – Bobby Goldsboro
  • “Honey Pie” – The Beatles
  • “Honey Honey” – ABBA
  • “Sweetest Thing” – U2
  • “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” – Marvin Gaye
  • “Sweet Child O’ Mine” – Guns N’ Roses

All of these are about romantic relationships. And romantic thoughts and relationships bring sweet comfort just as sweet food does. That’s why people reach for chocolate when things go wrong 😀.

Then there’s My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. Some people thought that he was singing about Jesus, but he was singing about Krishna. Like myself, George Harrison was raised a Roman Catholic, but he wasn’t impressed with nominal Christianity, where people just went along with it because it was expected in society.

My Sweet Lord

However, instead of focusing on Jesus and the Bible, he looked East. I don’t like to speak ill of the dead, but my impression is that like many westerners, he took aspects of it, such as chanting and meditation, but I don’t think true devotees of Krishna would have seen him as particularly devout. Perhaps in this respect, he was a little like pop country or soul musicians who might sing about Jesus in one song and sing about celebrating promiscuity in the next song. It’s always my hope that people will reach out to Jesus in the very final moments of their life, however confused they are about God, religion or life itself. And hopefully that happened with George. According to biographer Bob Spitz and evangelist Luis Palau, Harrison returned to Christianity in his final month. But I understand that Hindus don’t necessarily discourage devotion to Jesus, though their understanding of him is different.

And, as an evangelical Christian, I admire George for not allowing pop culture and the desire to be “cool” to silence him about his faith. I would regard his Living in the Material world album as one of the things that nudged me towards seeking a relationship with God, back in the 70s, though again, it wasn’t a Christian album.

Anyway, let’s get to the Bible. The biblical comfort food that I first think of is honey, which is compared to the word of God, which is a wonderful source of comfort.

Psalm 19:10
The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.

And when Paul address life’s stresses, he suggests prayer rather than food:

Phil 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I don’t think that he’s wanting to exclude other means of comfort, but we certainly shouldn’t put God out of the picture when we need comfort. So I can pray and read God’s word while I have my coffee and bun 😀.

Here are a few Christian songs about comfort:

The Law of the Lord is Perfect
How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds
I Have Tasted of the Lord
Sweet Than Honey
