An Irish personal evangelistic site. I'm not representing a particular church, but it's broadly evangelical in tone. My aim is to cover topics I've encountered in discussions I've had over the years, mainly here in Ireland..
One can certainly get that impression from some aspects of modern evangelicalism. We must remember though, that evangelicalism is a broad movement. All sorts of awful things can go on in any movement. A lot of churches dislike the term evangelical because it can associate them with dodgy TV evangelists and the prosperity gospel movement. … Continue reading Isn’t it all about money?
In the New Testament, the only mention of priests is in the context of Judaism and various practices associated with the temple. All this ended in AD 70 when the temple was destroyed. The Book of Hebrews deals extensively with how we no longer need priests or sacrifices. Jesus made a once for all sacrifice … Continue reading Do evangelical churches have priests?
Confession, as practiced in the Catholic church, is something that developed over centuries. Evangelicals don’t follow the Catholic pattern. But the New Testament does speak of confession in more general terms. For example, we should confess our sins to God.In the Lord’s prayer, we say “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass … Continue reading Why don’t you practice confession?
When I first met evangelicals, I used to take them to task on this issue. From a Catholic point of view, it just sounds too good to be true. In fact, I first heard this notion in history class in school. Martin Luther said that we’re saved by faith alone. If this is so, from … Continue reading Why do evangelicals say that they’re sure of going to heaven?
Well, as a Catholic, I was always told that the Catholic church was the official church. Jesus told Peter that he was the rock on which he would build his church. Peter was the first pope, and all the Catholic bishops were the successors of the apostles, and bishops of Rome were the successors of … Continue reading Didn’t Jesus make Peter the first pope?
Assumption The assumption is the belief that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. Scripture says nothing about this. The last we hear of Mary is on the day of Pentecost, where she’s one of the early disciples. While we see the New Testament as God’s word, we aren’t expected to believe in all … Continue reading How else do evangelicals differ from Catholics on the subject of Mary?
To venerate is to have great respect for someone. Scripture and history are full of characters that we can revere. We can admire Mary and follow her example. But we can’t communicate with humans or angels who are in Heaven. God is all powerful and all knowing. A million people could pray to him at … Continue reading Why don’t you venerate Mary?
When I first heard about Protestants, the big thing was that they didn’t believe in Mary. I was wrong. They do believe in Mary, but they don’t believe anything that wasn’t revealed in Scripture about her. So, as a non-Catholic, I just believe what the Bible says about Mary. I don’t accept the beliefs based … Continue reading What do you believe about Mary?
Born again is a New Testament term. It describes the beginning of the new life that God gives us. But there are different views on it. Some use it to describe a new start that they make in life. For example, someone with addiction problems might suddenly stop and undergo some sort of a conversion … Continue reading What’s all this born again stuff?
My purpose here is to answer questions that Roman Catholics sometimes ask evangelicals, like myself 😀. I find that most church websites focus on marketing their church and do little in the way of explaining what they’re about doctrinally. So, this is my attempt to answer questions that I would have asked all those years … Continue reading Evangelicals and Catholics
