I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy π. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God from around 2006.
When we speak of being born again, or the theological term, regeneration, it’s the Holy Spirit who breathes new life into us. Breath and wind are terms that we often associate with the Holy Spirit. And it doesn’t stop there because there’s spiritual growth, renewal, fruit and power. And the Holy Spirit is key to all that.
Pentecostals and charismatics emphasize some aspects of the Holy Spirits work, but even apart from that, the Holy Spirit is always active. Physically, we might seldom focus on the fact that we breath, but you would surely notice if you were unable to breath. And we might not notice the work of the Holy Spirit, but what would the world be like without His work?. For a start, it wouldn’t exist. He was involved in its creation, as was the Son. It doesn’t go into huge detail about the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, but the Spirit of God is often mentioned. When Jesus came, we got a much richer revelation and it will be richer again when Jesus returns.
And for a modern hymn, this one is particularly rich theologically. If you are interested in learning more about the Holy Spirit, as always, I suggest listening to my favourite theologian, Wayne Grudem. But even this hymn has some basic foundational knowledge of the work of the Spirit. And you can ask Microsoft Copilot for a theological breakdown.
Here are some other versions of today’s hymn:
