Hymns: Lord Give Me Also Springs of Water

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.

Today’s song is Lord Give Me Also Springs of Water.

Lord Give Me Also Springs of Water
Lyrics

I could choose many better-known worship songs from the late 20th Century, but I like to choose some that I actually sung in my early years as an evangelical Christian. I probably sang this one in 1981. We often went straight into it after singing “You Shall Go Out With Joy“. Both have the feel of Jewish folk music.

Lord Give Me Also Springs of Water is based on an Old Testament passage, where Achsah makes a request to her father, Caleb, for springs of water.

Joshua 15:19
19 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

I don’t know who wrote it, but they probably wanted to emphasize that we should seek more and more of God after we commit our lives to Christ. Water is often used as an illustration of spiritual life and refreshment in Scripture.

John 4:13-14
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 7:37-38
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

Revelation 22:17
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

I don’t see many versions of the song on YouTube, but I do hope that it’ll be remembered in years to come. So, today, instead of listing other versions of this hymn, I’ll list some other hymns about thirst and water.
