Well, when I was five, there was Batman, James Bond, and cowboy and war films. Perhaps I would have dreamt of being Batman, a cowboy, or a soldier. The real professions that I might have been more aware of were bus or truck drivers and teachers – and perhaps doctors, shopkeepers and farmers . I remember pretending to be a priest saying mass too. And I was big into circuses a few years later. I don’t remember having any definite career aspirations at that age. The idea of getting a calling to be a priest loomed large in Ireland. Perhaps I would have wondered about that.
I left the Roman Catholic church when I was 18 and became an evangelical Christian. I was never a formal “pastor” but I was full time in mission work for nine years and performed many pastoral duties in addition to evangelism. Other careers included engineering and IT. When I was 13, I wanted to be a psychiatrist or a psychologist for a time. And I dreamt of being a rock star, though I never entertained any real hope of that ever happening.
I settled on being a teacher when I was 15. I didn’t work as a teacher for very long through. Yet, teaching, of a sort, did span all my other careers.
But when I was five, I probably wanted to be Batman.
And I always wanted to be a Christian – at least that all worked out π.
