The best compliment that I received was from Cilla Black – You’re My World π . Only thing is, maybe she meant someone else. But if she did, why didn’t she call it “He’s My World.” She was clearly singing it to me π .
It’s one of the songs that I would have heard as a young toddler on the radio. I remember, a few years later, watching the Black and White Minstrel show, and I thought that one of the girls was smiling out at me. I hadn’t figured out how looking into the camera gives the impression that the person is looking at you π .
Seriously, I can’t remember what the best compliment was. It’s always a pleasure to have someone compliment you or even subtlety show that they appreciate you. Perhaps the best experience I had was with both my parents when they were dying. They didn’t necessarily know that they were dying, but they indicated how much joy I had brought into their lives. That meant so much to me.
Something else that stands out was when I used to speak in churches around Ireland when I was involved in mission work. People would always be nice, but now and then you’d get someone who was clearly touched by my message or even regarded me as an excellent preacher. It’s always a little easier to be appreciated on a one-off visit to a church. In your own church. people probably get tired of you making the same points over and over again. But I myself have often been deeply blessed by sermons, and they weren’t always necessarily from famous or great preachers. And if anything I’ve done or said has had a similar effect on someone, that would mean a great deal to me.
I don’t always take compliments very seriously. Sometimes people are flattering you for their own purposes. People might feel sorry for you and try to encourage you. Or others might just habitually be nice to others. When I want to compliment someone, I generally try to be specific and show that I’m not just being nice.
Anyway, back to today’s song. It’s an old 1960s love song. I just wonder if you could convert it to a hymn and sing it to God. Looking at the lyrics, I think that you could. Romance songs are great. I just wonder how such feelings last. Is romance just nature’s way of nudging you towards marriage? What happens after you’re married. It’s a lovely thing for a couple to support each other throughout their lives, but I just can’t imagine a married person being that much “in love” after the initial stages. But we’ll love God for all eternity. And our love for each other in heaven will be much greater than anything that we experience on earth.
And here are some love-themed hymns:
