I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the in-between hymns.
Today’s song is The Power of Your Love, from 1995.
I discovered this one in 2017 when I started familiarizing myself with modern hymns. Back in 1995, I was into old hymns and I didn’t have any appetite for the newer stuff. I tended to associate it all with the silly side of evangelicalism, but any stream of evangelicalism or anything else can have its silly side, and I can be quite silly myself 😀. So, nowadays, I’m much more open to new songs as well as old. I hardly ever find any that I dislike, but some are more appealing than others. And this one appeals to me, both musically and lyrically.
For whatever reason, I always like to hear eagles mentioned in hymns. I remember seeing an eagle in a bird show at Aillwee Cave, in County Clare (Ireland). The guy mentioned that eagles generally avoid flying to spare energy. But when they do fly, I feel so envious of them. I remember telling my daughter that I wish I had wings. Her reply was “but then you wouldn’t have any hands”. Funny that I never thought of that until then 😀.

Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side.
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love.
Isaiah 40:29
He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
30Â Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.
I remember that passage from Isaiah being quotes on U2’s War album back in 1983. And many hymns are based on the passage. Some secular songs mention eagles too.
My favourite is Abba’s Eagle. I secretly liked it back in 1978 when I thought of myself as a punk rocker. Now I shout it from the highest hill, and my secret love’s no secret anymore 😀.
Anyway, I’ve already include the version of The Power of Love from Oslo, but here are a few more from various parts.

“but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint”
Amen!
