I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the old hymns.
Today’s song is Jesus is Lord from 1974.
Perhaps I should have classified this one as one of the “in-between hymns”. It’s not very old, but it’s written in the style of the older hymns rather than the 1970s charismatic worship choruses. This hymn has a special place in my heart, mainly because of the lyrics. But it’s also one that I learned in London back in 82-83 when I spent a year working with London City Mission. I’ve written about that in response to today’s Daily Prompt question.
I think that it’s a pity that we don’t have more modern hymns written in the traditional style. I do like the others, but it does delight me to hear the older style too. And this is one that’s well-loved by all kinds of churches, including churches that wouldn’t touch Hillsong music with a barge pole 😀.
I don’t see many instances of the song on YouTube. Maybe so many new songs have been written in the last 50 years that many “in-between” hymns will be forgotten. However, hopefully they won’t be totally forgotten. It’s always a delight to find old songs on YouTube.
I love all the lyrics, particularly the second verse:
Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal
In flesh he came to die in pain on Calvary's tree.
Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding,
Yet gave his life a ransom, thus setting us free:
As I mentioned, I don’t see many instances of it on YouTube, apart from Lyric videos. But there are other songs about the Lordship of Jesus. So, let’s have a look at some of these:
Romans 10:9
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10Â that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11Â and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
