When I’m 64

Daily writing prompt
What is the biggest challenge you will face in the next six months?

I’ll be 64 in the next six months 😱. Paul McCartney sings “I could be handy mending a fuse, when your lights have gone“. But I don’t know anything about fixing fuses. So let’s hope that I don’t need to face the challenge of mending a fuse 😀.

Seriously, I can’t think of any challenges that I’m likely to face in the next six months. But when you reach 60, you start to become more aware of health issues. It’s not that you can’t have health issues earlier in life, but it just seems to loom large. The best thing I can do is to watch my diet, my exercise, such was daily fast walks, and pick up tips, such as relaxation exercises which can help ease tension in the body.

And spiritually, I can look to God for help and healing. Healing has always been a controversial subject in evangelical circles. You’d hear of extreme Pentecostals who would put their faith in God rather than doctors. I only ever met one couple that went that far. And then, you’d have healing crusades with some healer guy promising miracles. Few Pentecostals that I knew expressed much confidence in that sort of thing.

Yet, sometimes a public emphasis on healing can motivate people to look to God for help and healing. And you don’t need to be a Pentecostal to do that. Whenever I have any kind of a problem, I bring it to God. God provides the medical profession, so I make use of that too. I tend to assume that God thinks that I’ve had a pretty easy life compared to most. So, I don’t understand why He’d want to do special favours for me. But, because God wants us to pray, maybe He does surprise us from time to time and give us the answer that we desire. And even if He doesn’t, he can help us to cope and give us hope for the future when illness will be banished forever for all those who have put their faith in him.

Revelation 21:3-4
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

And here are some songs about healing:

Healer of Our Every Ill
O Christ, the Healer
Take My Hand, Precious Lord
Healer
Healing is in Your Hands
The Hurt and the Healer
