Hymns: I Will Rise

I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy 😀. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.

Today’s song is I Will Rise. It’s from 2008.

Broken Vessels
Lyrics

Chris Tomlin and pastor Louie Giglio wrote the song to comfort those who are encountering deep grief. We look to the resurrection of Jesus, which assures us that we will rise too, but even now, in a metaphorical sense, we rise out of sadness and despair.

Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead
And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow, no more pain
I will rise on eagles' wings
Before my God fall on my knees
And rise
I will rise

Ephesians 2:6-7
6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

I’m determined to learn all these new songs. I certainly can recall the lyrics of some of the old hymns. But I find that hymns are a great means of leading you into prayer – and as they say, variety is the spice of life.

I found several other hymns with a similar theme and title:

Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

And here are a few versions of the Chris Tomlin song:
