I’ve been exploring some of the very modern worship songs as an old guy π. But now, I’ve decided to alternate between very modern hymns, old hymns, and in-between hymns, namely the worship songs from the 60s to the 90s that feature in hymnbooks such as Mission Praise. Today it’s the turn of the very modern hymns.
Today’s song is This is Our God by Phil Wickham. It’s from 2023.
I thought the title was a little unusual, but there’s another song with the same title from 2008 from Hillsong. Here’s the other song:
Anyway, I’ll focus on the Phil Wickham song today. I love the lyrics. I think that I’ll find it useful whenever I start a session of prayer. It’s often good to begin with a passage of Scripture or a hymn. The whole hymn is full of thankfulness. The stand-out lines for me are the following:
Remember that fear that took our breath away?
Faith so weak that we could barely pray
But He heard every word, every whisper
I think of the father of the prodigal son rushing out to meet him. And I think of how my parents often warmly reassured me of their love when I went to them as a young child after breaking something or losing something. It also reminds me of a line from that song from Prince of Egypt back in 1998:
Now, we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains
Long before we knew we could,
I like to find various versions of hymns, particularly from other regions of the world, but maybe today’s song is too new. But I’ll do my best – actually, I’ll cheat by including the Hillsong song too – different song, same title π. I’m only just becoming familiar with both. The last video listed below is in Dublin. Maybe YouTube has many videos of Irish worship groups, but I rarely come across any. I must have a look sometime soon π.
