Well, I’m already doing it, but it’s a constant battle, and I do need to improve. It’s good to have a home for everything and to get out of the habit of keeping things just in case I might need them again sometime – especially broken things. But then again, sometimes it can be fun to resurrect something like an old gaming console.

My dream (if I had the money) would be to buy two identical houses next to each other. I’d keep one totally clutter free, and keep my stuff in the other one. I suspect though that both of them would end up full of clutter π.

As I look around my room right now – it is full of clutter π. It’s the same with my computer. I just need to do a 10-minute tidy of my room. And on the computer, I see lots of old installation files for music production software that I could probably delete. Nowadays, if you’ve purchased the programs, you can generally download them again if you need to. But there’s always a slight fear that you won’t be able to, which is why there’s so much junk on my computers.
Does the Bible say anything about clutter? Not really. But the following verses are related to paying too much attention to gathering things up in this life.
Matthew 6:19-21
19 βDo not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
1 Timothy 6:7
βWe brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.β
So what might help is to:
- Live simply
- Let go of what distracts
- Keep your heart focused on what matters
- Avoid being weighed down by possessions
- Seek peace and order
