I’ve rarely driven outside of Ireland, and when I have, it’s only been as far as the UK. I’ve been on lots of wonderful road trips. It’s hard to decide which is the most memorable. Perhaps the UK trips stick in my mind more because I’ve only done a few. Most were on the western side, such as Wales, Somerset, Dorset, Lancashire and Cumbria. I did once drive as far east as York.
Anyway, if I need to choose, I’ll say my trip from Brean Sands, near Weston Super Mare to Lynmouth in North Devon.
Lynmouth is very beautiful in itself, but there’s also lots of nice places on the way, such as Dunster, Minehead and Exmoor.

What makes my trip even more memorable is a very scary steep hill – Porlock Hill. In that area, you see lots of notices warning you to put your car into a certain gear, what to do if your brakes fail etc. Being a worrier π, I’m always very glad when I’m back on normal roads again, though the scary ones are generally more scenic.
Anyway, as I climbed Porlock hill, I saw a coach ahead of me with some cars in between. I said to myself, if the coach can make it up the hill, I should be fine. Then, the coach got stuck on a steep bend, and we all had to stop. Someone came and told us that we all had to reverse to make room for the coach to manoeuvre. I don’t ever remember reversing down a steep hill before. Anyway, I managed to do it safely and eventually, we all moved on. We had a lovely drive after that. Later that day, I noticed that there was an open-top bus ride from Minehead to Lynmouth. So perhaps next time, I’ll park the car at Minehead, and we can hop on the bus to Lynmouth π. So, the bus can deal with the scary hills – hopefully the bus’s brakes won’t fail, and we won’t go hurtling backwards down a hill π±.
Anyway, here’s my hill on the left and Harlech in Wales on the right, which is even steeper.
When I want horror, I don’t need Dracula or Frankenstein. I just watch YouTube videos of scary roads π.
Now, I want to weave pop music and Christianity into this post but how? Well, I can just think of a few songs or hymns about hills or mountains.
And here are a couple of hymns that mention mountains:
Isaiah 52:7
βHow beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good newsβ¦β

The West is best!
