My Chief End

Daily writing prompt
What is your mission?

A concise way to answer this question is to quote from the Westminster Shorter Catechism:

Q. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.

And this is obviously based on Scriptural teaching. Here’s what Microsoft Copilot listed when I asked it about what the Bible tells us about our chief aim:

  • Ecclesiastes 12:13 — Our whole duty is to fear God and keep His commandments
  • Micah 6:8 — God shows what He requires: justice, mercy, and walking humbly with Him
  • Matthew 22:37–38 — The greatest commandment: love God with all your heart, soul, and mind
  • Matthew 6:33 — Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 — Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God
  • Romans 12:1–2 — Offer your life as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God
  • Philippians 3:13–14 — Press toward the goal of God’s heavenly calling
  • Colossians 3:17 — Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus
  • Colossians 3:23–24 — Work wholeheartedly for the Lord, not for people
  • 1 Peter 2:9 — You are chosen to declare the praises of God

For this blog, my mission is to spread the gospel. But it’s fun and challenging for me too. The web is full of resources about the Christian faith, so why am I bothering to add to it?

Well, God can use all sorts of things and people to draw people to himself. And in evangelism, I think it’s good not to present yourself as a stereotypical Christian. It’s much better for people to see you as you are. Back in my teens, I used to meet evangelical Christians (before I became one myself 😄). I’m thankful for them all. But some were annoying or intense. I would have wondered if I could be an evangelical Christian. I couldn’t see myself being like them. But as time went on, I met all types of evangelical Christians. And I came to see that you don’t have to model yourself on specific people and strictly adhere to all the doctrines or practices of specific churches or movements.

My blog contains many memories of “worldly music”. Some might disapprove of that. But I find joy in all creation and creativity. I might not agree with all the lyrics or lifestyles of rock stars, but that doesn’t stop me from cherishing their music and the memories that it evokes.

The church of God consists of all types of people. If you go to a church, you won’t be in a room full of “Ned Flanderses”. You’ll get all sorts. Some might be very warm and friendly, some a bit annoying or domineering, some a bit introverted (I’m beginning to be like that myself). So I would hope that I can encourage those who are already believers and point others to Christ.

One of my favourite Bible verses is a quote from John the Baptist. Some of John the Baptist’s followers didn’t realize who Jesus was. When they saw more people going to Jesus, they were troubled. They saw him as a rival. John explained that his sole purpose was to point people to Jesus. And of course, that’s precisely what happened:

John 3:30
“He must become greater; I must become less.”

I don’t expect any great success with this blog. But even if it did take off, my aim would not be to build my own empire or anyone else’s empire, but to point people to Jesus. And that’s all part of glorifying God and enjoying him forever.
