As I write, I’m listening to BBC Radio 2. I particularly like hearing songs that I mightn’t have liked much at the time, but that transport me back to my earlier years. Maybe they played on the radio without me even being conscious that I was listening to them.
I can remember this happening twice over the last few years with the following songs from the 1990s.
I took little notice of Mariah Carey or Janet Jackson at the time. I’ve probably played the artists that I like so much down through the years that I no longer associate them with a particular point in time. So, old songs make me feel nostalgic, as do old computer games and old photographs.
Funnily enough, some Christian songs make me feel nostalgic, particularly songs that were new to me in the early 1980s. In the late 80s, I lost interest in new Christian music and I started to prefer the old hymns. Nowadays, I like exploring all Christian music – even the very new songs.
