I have been reviewing some modern worship songs, but I’ve taken a break to explore some Advent and Christmas hymns. ๐. Just when you think Christmas is over, you remind yourself that December 25th is the first of the 12 days of Christmas. So, I’ll wait until January 7th to go back to normal hymns.
Today I’ve chosen Graham Kendrick’s What Kind of Greatness.
I’m not generally a fan of modern Christmas hymns, but I make an exception for this one. Firstly, it’s not all that modern ๐. It goes back to 1994, which is an era that I’m beginning to feel nostalgic about, though I didn’t discover the hymn until around 2017. Secondly, it’s a great song.
Yesterday I chose “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”, a hymn written by someone who believed that Jesus was just a man. It has a nice Christmassy feel, but today, my delight is in choosing a thoroughly evangelical hymn:
That God should come as one of us
Iโll never understand
The more I hear the story told
The more amazed I am
Oh what else can I do
But kneel and worship you
And come just as I am
My whole life an offering
It was also part of the Christmas collection Rumours of Angels from 2001โ a project exploring the mystery of the Incarnation and the meaning of God becoming human.

Here’s another couple of songs from the Rumours of Angels collection:
Graham Kendrick made another Christmas album back in 1988, Make Way for Christmas (The Gift). Back in the 1980s, I took a dislike to what I saw as the “trendy” end of evangelicalism. I preferred the really old hymns. But looking back now, I think that Graham Kendrick’s music is excellent. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of his songs will last another few centuries. Who knows?
Here are four of songs from Make Way for Christmas (The Gift):
