I’ve Found a Friend

Daily writing prompt
What relationships have a positive impact on you?

Someone once said that some people bring joy wherever they go and others bring joy whenever they go 😀. But I think that all relationships have had a positive impact on me, from God to family, to friends and acquaintances. I probably wouldn’t form any kind of relationship with a really nasty person. But sometimes, the people that seem nasty turn out to have your best interests at heart. I am a bit of an introvert, so maybe I don’t have as much experience of relationships as other have. But my mind is full of happy memories of pleasant people that I’ve encountered throughout my life.

In the Bible, even in the Old Testament, we are encouraged to love others:

Leviticus 19:24
The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

And, of course, loving God is emphasized as the greatest command:

Deuteronomy 6:5
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

And Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan in response to someone who asked “who is my neighbour”. This served as a reminder not to dismiss people who society might regard as enemies or outsiders.

Still, there are some verses in the New Testament that encourage us to avoid troublesome people.

Romans 16:17
“Watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles… avoid them.”

1 Cor 5:11
11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.

However, we should always hope that they’ll change.

[Spoiler alert] This chap was quite troublesome at one stage, as was the Apostle Paul. In fact, by nature, all of us are classified as God’s enemies. Yet, Jesus died for sinners. And heaven will be full of saved sinners.

Romans 5:10
For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Revelation 1:5-6
"...To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Anyway, let me close with a few songs about Jesus as a friend. It might seem irreverent to speak of Jesus as a friend, but He himself assured his disciples that he was their friend:

John 15:15
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
