The Simpsons

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite cartoon?

I’d like to confuse everyone with an unknown cartoon, but I have to say The Simpsons πŸ˜€. I used to enjoy cartoons as a kid, but none of them were very good. I suppose Mr. Magoo was my favourite back then. I should make a list of what I watched. I will in a while. Shortly after we got married back in 1988, we used to watch the Tracey Ullman show, which had a short Simpsons slot. Even then, I used to enjoy them.

And then, in the 1990s, all our kids were born, and they grew up with The Simpsons. The Simpsons has a strong moral dimension. Back in the early 1990s, I remember George Bush saying that he wanted America more like The Waltons and less like the Simpsons, but both families were like most of us really. As a Christian, perhaps I should be more like Ned Flanders, but most of us feel more like Homer πŸ˜€.

I have this book on my shelf for years, which I still haven’t got around to reading. I must read it over Christmas. The Gospel According to The Simpsons by Mark I. Pinsky is a book that explores the religious and spiritual themes within the The Simpsons. It examines how the show portrays faith, morality, and theology through its characters, storylines, and humour.

I find the recent episodes disappointing. I don’t know when it stopped being good. But I find that I enjoy watching the 1990s episodes over and over again. Back in the late 1990s, we used to enjoy Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain too. I don’t think we ever produced cartoons in Ireland, at least none that were popular. And I don’t even remember much coming from the UK. I vaguely remember Lolek and Bolek from Eastern Europe. It was the sort of thing that they’d put on if they were having trouble with another show.

Anyway, here’s a list of cartoons that I fondly remember from my childhood.

  • The Flintstones
  • The Jetsons
  • Wait Till Your Father Gets Home
  • The Pink Panther
  • These Are the Days
  • Tom and Jerry
  • Woody Woodpecker
  • Roadrunner
  • Top Cat
  • The Bugs Bunny Show

I always like to end with a song. The Prince of Egypt is an animated movie rather than a cartoon. I just love this song. I ignored it back in 1998, but I rediscovered it a couple of years ago.
