In this series, I explore some of the very modern worship songs from the point of view of an older guy. I like to be positive. I spent a good part of my life criticizing all things modern, but now that I’m in my sixties, I’m trying to avoid being a stereotypical “grumpy old man.” ๐ And as I examine the lyrics of these hymns, I find much that lifts my spirit.
So, todays song is 2017’s King of My Heart. The lyrics are in the video and on the Bethelmusic.com site.

The chorus does sound a little odd.
Yes, You are good
You're good, oh-oh
You are good
You're good, oh-oh
You are good
You're good, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
You are good
You're good, oh-oh
I shouldn’t criticize because I’ve never written any songs, but I would have thought that it would be nice to explain why God is good. But maybe we can think of the reasons while we repeat the lines. And if we can’t, ask Microsoft Copilot. But you can also think of personal reasons why God has been good to you. The very fact that you are thinking about God is evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work in your life. And that’s evidence of God’s goodness to you.
Another line that I find slightly puzzling is:
Let the King of my heart be the mountain where I run
What does that mean? ๐ But I suppose the general message is that we want God involved in every aspect of our lives, and of course He is. But’s its wonderful to celebrate it.
You’re never gonna let, You’re never gonna let me down
King of My Heart doesn’t impress me much lyrically. But then again, if I’m in a prayer meeting, I don’t focus on rating the prayers that people pray. Some might be very eloquent, some might be very simple. But I rejoice that people are praying. And at times, simple prayers or simple praise is all our minds can handle.
Many other hymns speak of God as our King:
- The King of Love My Shepherd Is
- You Are the King of Glory
- King of My Life I Crown Thee Now
- You Are a Mighty King
- King of Kings, Majesty
- O Worship the King
- Rejoice the Lord is King
- King of Heaven
- The King is Among Us
- King of Glory King of Peace
Here are my two favourites from that list:
Psalm 23:6
โSurely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.โ
Romans 8:28
โAnd we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.โ
Revelation 19:16
โOn his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.โ
