Hymns: 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

In this little series, I take a glance at some of the very modern worship songs. I’m only getting familiar with these in the last few years. I remember back in the 1990s, I started growing tired of the newer songs and focusing on the old hymns. But nowadays, I like all Christian music.

This one was released in 2011. It seems to be popular in a lot of churches, not just the very modern ones.

Lyric Video

You can read the lyrics in the second video and on the worshiptogether.com site. It’s inspired by Psalm 103, and won two Grammy Awards in 2013. Matt Redman also wrote a book related to it – 10,000 reasons.

I don’t really understand why it’s so popular. I knew many modern songs back in the 1980s and 1990s that seemed much better, but they didn’t have such an impact. I do like the closing verse though:

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore
Forevermore

Perhaps one reason for its popularity is that it’s easier to sing than many of the modern worship songs. Maybe it’ll be remembered long after many other modern songs are forgotten. And it’s popular throughout the world. Here are a few examples:
